“Which memories and experiences from your time as a DAAD scholarship holder in Germany stand out to you the most, and how do they continue to influence your professional career or personal perspective today?”
During my time as a DAAD scholarship holder in Germany, many enriching experiences have left a lasting impact on both my professional development and personal growth. Coming from Libya and having studied Pharmacy at the University of Benghazi, I had the privilege of continuing my academic journey at Braunschweig Technical University, where I pursued a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from October 2018 to December 2023. Under the mentorship of Professor Ludger Beerheus, I conducted research that led to several publications in internationally peer-reviewed journals. My doctoral work was part of a larger collaborative research project involving multiple academic and industrial partners across Germany. This interdisciplinary cooperation gave me valuable insight into how science and innovation are integrated across institutions and sectors in Germany.
One of the most memorable aspects of my experience was participating in DAAD-organized meetings and events. These gatherings provided a platform for exchange between scholars from diverse disciplines and countries. They fostered a strong sense of academic community and offered opportunities to network, share research ideas, and form collaborations. Additionally, I had the chance to present my research at several international conferences, which enhanced my communication skills and allowed me to connect with leading scientists in my field.
Equally important was the opportunity to learn the German language. DAAD provided excellent resources and support for language learning, which helped me integrate into both academic and daily life. Mastering the language opened doors to deeper engagement with my colleagues, participation in seminars, and smoother navigation of life in Germany.
I am especially grateful for the comprehensive support DAAD provided not only to me but also to my family during the scholarship period. The financial and logistical assistance made it possible for us to live comfortably, which allowed me to focus fully on my academic work without undue stress. This holistic support made a significant difference in our overall experience.
Overall, my time as a DAAD scholar has had a profound and lasting influence on me. The values of scientific rigor, intercultural dialogue, and academic cooperation continue to shape my career path. Today, I carry with me a broader global perspective, a strong research foundation, and a deep appreciation for international collaboration—qualities that will continue to guide me in contributing to science and education both in Libya and abroad.
